Today is Carnival! It’s the biggest celebration of the year and Cajamarca is the main city to celebrate in. People from all over Peru come here to take part in a huge fiesta. There’s water balloons galore and even scarier than water balloons…people through buckets of paint. Not just paint, but paint mixed with gasoline or pee or whatever else disgusting they can think of. Needless to say, it wasn’t safe for us to be in the city today. We found something else to do…take a hike!!
It was the perfect afternoon for us to go exploring. There are some hills right next to Puylucana and we’ve always wanted to see the other side. It wasn’t the most exciting thing in the world, but it was fun. We found some small waterfalls, some beautiful flowers, lots of little houses and peasant people, wild animals, funky looking trees and many other things. On our way back down we stopped for a small packed lunch of chicken sandwiches with cheese, tomato and onion, carrots, a granola bar and a plum. It was literally the best tasting plum I’ve ever had. And it’s not just because we’d hiked up a mountain and anything would taste good.

| Later we saw a family out plowing with the cows. |
| Walking where no gringas have walked before. |
| To make their fence they cut down the tree branches and wove them together on the bottom...genius. |
| This was after a few bees had already flown out of the flower. |
