Backpacks for School

On Friday we had the chance to give all of our kids new school supplies since school starts on Monday.  We’ve had this stuff sitting in the kids room ever since we’ve been here and have been dying to get it out.

Noelle has an amazing Relief Society back home that made a bunch of backpacks as well as collected other hygiene materials for us to give to them.  We filled the backpacks as well as every other plastic ziplock bag and plastic trash bag we could find and assembled a little over 50 bags for children.

On Friday, as they came to the center I wrote down their name, age (we had different bags for older and younger kids) and whether or not they already had a backpack.  It was quite a challenge to get stuff to every kid because as soon as the first girls left with backpacks, everyone wanted one.  They didn’t seem too fazed by the fact that some got nice packs and some came just in trashbags…as long as they still got stuff.  Some looked so grateful to be receiving this gift and would give me a big hug and thank you.

I hope this makes their first days of school just a little bit easier and give them a tad more confidence that they have just as much worth as the other kids, even if their families don’t have as much money.

They actually were much happier than they look in some of the pictures....
