This was not just any Mormon missionary; this was a Mormon missionary from Vernal, UT that spoke ENGLISH. We had just walked into the mall (like a real, American mall but pretty small) and Brittany spotted them in the shoe store. Of course, we bee-lined over to them and said “Elders!” and he responded in English without hesitation. It was beautiful.
I actually grew up with a guy who’s serving in Cajamarca right now and was so hoping it would be him but I go the next best thing…his companion! (They were all mixed up today…whatever that’s called.) His companion was from Chile so he didn’t know a ton of English but it was awesome to talk to him a bit anyways. We probably talked to the white elder for 20 minutes. He was super helpful in telling us some things around the area to do and also letting us know where a church in Cajamarca was and informing us there’s going to be a HUGE YSA activity with a bunch of stakes in a few weeks. We need to talk to the Stake President (who happens to ALSO be our local bishop) and get the details on that as the missionaries aren’t quite up-to-date on YSA activities haha
We got quite a few weird looks from the store clerks as we were a bunch of white folks having an English conversation in a shoe store that was nothing less than animated. Oh well! It made our day so much better!
The white elder is planning on going to BYUI in the Spring so we got to tell him how awesome that is and I told him to name drop my name when he calls the admissions office to get things worked out with them. If anyone from admissions is reading this, take extra care of Parker Seitz!!
